Thank you all so much for a spectacular vacation - it was much more than I expected. I especially loved Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave, rappelling at Black Hole Drop and the zip-lining. The adrenaline rush for each of these is wow! Thanks to all the wonderful guides. I already miss the meals and ice cream every evening meal.

Belize Guest Comments from Sheree and Vanessa Wills, Washington, USA

Thank you for the great time. It was very nice getting to know the staff at the Belize Jungle Dome, they are very interesting and give so much back to the community (as do Karen’s family, friends and herself). All our trips were excellent. We especially enjoyed the Actun Tunichil Muknal Caves, Tikal Mayan Temples & Caracol tours! Vanessa LOVED the Black Hole Drop Rappelling the best. We also appreciated our guides. Gonzo was the best. We would also like to give special acknowledgement to Karen and David. Not only were they helpful, they were entertaining and just fun. The rest of the staff was great too. This will be an experience I will remember for the rest of my life.

We wish health & happiness to all at the Jungle Dome.

La Ruta Maya Canoe Race in Belize

The tenth annual La Ruta Maya River Challenge -- the longest canoe race in Central America - will take to the river from March 8th - 11th, 2007

Beginning in the scenic foothills of the Maya Mountains and finishing in the bustling port city of Belize City, the race will travel from West to East along the historic river trail of the Macal and Belize Rivers. Once the only link between the two coasts, these tributaries served as a major trading route for Belize's once powerful Mayan civilization. Today, the La Ruta Maya River trail still follows in the footsteps of its legendary past with a route of lush, unspoiled landscapes lined with exotic flora and fauna.

In addition to being hailed as Belize's most competitive sporting event, La Ruta Maya River Challenge is also one of the country's largest collaborative conservation efforts. Held in the spirit of preservation and revitalization of Belize's precious waterways, the La Ruta Maya will donate all proceeds to local environmental groups that help sustain and keep the river clean.

La Ruta Maya Canoe race passes by the front door of the Belize Jungle Dome and makes camp for the first stopover night on the river Bank next to the Lodge. Availability for a 3 Night minimum stay is still available to view the spectacular start of the second days racing. Contact Belize Jungle Dome on 501 (Belize country code) 822 2124 or email at info@greendragonbelize.com.

For more information on the race, please contact race headquarters at 501-824-2444, or contact the Belize Tourism Board at 501-223-1913, www.travelbelize.org.

Belize Guest Comments from Jim Heslin and Andrea Dixon, Houston, Texas, USA

Howdy!

I don’t know where to start! This has honestly been the best vacation we have ever had! Our adventure began with David picking us up from the airport for a quick trip to the zoo. The zoo was perfect and gave us an idea of what lives in this beautiful country. After arriving at the Dome later that afternoon we hit the pool and relaxed until dinner. I did my research on Belize online and through a couple of tour books, none of which did justice to what you actually see or experience.

All of the meals were beyond this world & are comparable to what you would find in quality restaurants. We await a cookbook!

Aside from the family-like atmosphere and pure beauty of the Dome, the outings during the day really let you see the area. Each outing requires a drive, but along the way you see the little villages and the people who make up the area.

Jim and I planned our own adventures that started with the Blackhole drop. This trip isn’t for those that don’t have a bit of nerve. The hike there is a definite workout, but you’re able to do it at your own pace, drink lots of water!! At the site of the repel be sure to pay close attention to the guides. Your safety is the most important thing, and trust what they say, you’ll experience something that can not be put into words!

The next day we went through the ATM cave with Gonzo. WOW, WOW, WOW!!!! This is an absolute treat. Gonzo acted as a personal history professor, his knowledge is first-hand and enjoyable to listen to. I couldn’t get enough of the stories. Each evening following these two trips we both where exhausted and starving, the pool & the meals and a few Belikins were the remedy.

Our other two trips were kayaking and cave tubing. Kayaking was a blast, but a little quicker due to the river being so high. Cave tubing with Carlos was the most relaxing of our adventures and one that I highly recommend. There’s nothing like sitting in a tire and letting a crystal clear river whisk you through beautiful lime stone caves.

Highlights :

  • Very friendly service from the happiest people we’ve ever met!

  • Food, food, food (push for a cookbook!)

  • Fantastic guides

  • Local children

  • Conversations with Andy & Simone and the other guests

We can’t wait to come back! Many more thanks!

Warm regards,
Andrea Dixon and Jim Heslin, Houston, Texas, USA. November 2006

What can we say. You define HOSPITALITY!

We've done tons of traveling over the years but have never enjoyed staying anywhere before. We're usually on the move and use the hotel / lodge as a place to sleep before setting off for the day.

This is the first time we've looked forward to returning at the end of the day. We leave with mixed feelings because we will miss all of you (Belize Jungle Dome).

We didn't meet the owners and the staff, we shared a special place in the world with family. The country is a beautiful one, that goes without saying. But of all the things and places we have seen and done, what we will remember most is you.

Good luck and good life

This has been an experience of a lifetime!

Words will never be able to describe just how much fun we've had these past few days. It's been an amazing vacation for both Mom and I. We're both sorry we have to say farewell tomorrow. We truly don't want to leave.

Andy, Simone and the entire staff have gone out of their way to make sure we've stayed comfortable - and the hospitality has gone beyond amazing. The food is delectable - yummy!

Be sure to ask for Gonzo and/or Carlos as your Tour Guides. They're both a riot. We hope to see you all again soon.

Belize Carbon Neutral Travel

In line with the Belize Jungle Dome long term vision and Belizes Environmentally-Friendly appeal, we are in the process of working out Carbon Neutral Travel for our guests. What does this mean?

What is Carbon Neutral?

CarbonNeutral is the point at which the emissions from an activity or series of activities have been :

  1. Assessed
  2. reduced, where possible; and
  3. the remaining emissions offset through investments in renewable energy, energy efficiency or forestry projects

Definition provided by Carbonneutral.com

The average American generates about 15,000 pounds of carbon dioxide every year from personal transportation, home energy use and from the energy used to produce all of the products and services we consume.

Definition provided by An Inconvenient Truth

What is the Belize Jungle Dome doing?

  • We are meeting with suitable Belizean organizations in order to offset the amount of Carbon emissions created by our guests travel. This includes calculating the emissions from Air Travel, Car Travel, Use of A/C, Travel in Belize by Car and Air etc. How will we do this? By offering a Carbon Neutral surcharge that will be used to support local Environmental projects such as re-forestation.
  • Attempting to reduce our emissions with simple measures such as collection of Rainwater.
  • Solar Hot Water Heating to reduce the amount of energy used in our Hot Water Heating.
  • Using Low energy Bulbs throughout our Lodge cutting out light energy bills by up to 1/3rd.
  • Composting Toilets.
  • It is our intention that we do not sacrifice our guests comfort so that Carbon Neutral travel will actually enhance the experience of your travel to Belize.
  • We are in the early stages of this development but would welcome feedback from guests who have stayed at the Belize Jungle Dome in the past and future guests considering traveling to Belize. Email us.

Useful Tools

Calculate your energy use and assess what you can do to reduce your consumption.

Manatee Protections in Belize Should Be World Model

"In Belize they've got a strong [manatee] population, probably the densest in all of Central and South America," said Caryn Self-Sullivan, a doctoral candidate in wildlife and fisheries at Texas A&M University in College Station......

Scientists believe at least a thousand manatees ply Belize's coastal waters, which are protected by barrier reefs, dotted with mangrove islands, and sliced by narrow channels........

......Belize's current tourism boom, for example, is driving increased coastal development and boat traffic that pose a threat to the nation's manatees, she says.

Unbelizable Beach and Jungle Getaways

"Unscathed by overdevelopment because of a protective barrier reef that keeps cruise ships from visiting the many small islands along its coast, Belize remains a tourist haven where travelers seeking privacy or adventure can still find both. Top 10 Travel tips for travel to Belize

  1. Leave your fancy designer clothes at home. This country is laid-back to the max, where flip-flops and a bikini or hiking boots and shorts are as fancy as you need to get.
  2. Take off your watch. Simply go to bed when it is dark (anytime after 6.30 pm) and get up again with the sun (anytime from 6 am onwards). Your daily alarm clock will be the breaking waves on the shore or the tropical chorus of birds and howler monkeys in the jungle.
  3. Realize that when people in Belize tell you 'right now', they don't actually mean 'right now'. They are actually asking you to wait a minute (or two or three). Try not to stress, things will get done.
  4. Slap on the SPF to protect your skin from sun damage and pre-mature aging. Your tan will develop anyhow!
  5. Bring mosquito repellant. We have good nights and bad & it's impossible to predict when the mosquitoes will appear.
  6. If you are hooked on junk food, get your fix before coming to Belize. You will not find any KFC's, McDonalds or Burger Kings here. Our fast food is chicken, rice & beans.
  7. Be prepared to fall in love in with this odd little country (secretly eyeing up the real estate signs and casually asking people about local property prices)
  8. Unless you are a diving, sun bathing or sea fishing fanatic, do not spend more than 5 days on San Pedro or any of the other Cayes. You will have seen all there is to see and will end up going stir crazy.
  9. Leave your hair dryer at home. With all this humidity and sunshine you'll be fighting a losing battle anyhow. We all have terrible hair in Belize..join us!
  10. Try out things you've never done before. Abseil, kayak, dive, drink from a coconut and enjoy being away from what you call 'the real world'. This place is actually more real than most of Western society, as what you see is what you get. No billboards no catch phrases, just Mother Nature at her finest.

Top 10 Travel tips for travel to Belize - Jon Lenaerts and Al Romao

  1. Bring several pair of sneakers and sandals
  2. Cash is important for minor purchases and daily tipping to guides. We never found a use for Travelers cheques
  3. Bring Soap and Shampoo
  4. If you get car sick, Dramamine is suggested. The roads are rather bumpy!
  5. A Protector for film for your camera so that the scanners at airports do not warp your film
  6. Bring a couple of bathing suits, as it is always damp and humid...Wet clothing does not dry very fast
  7. Change of attitude. Things are of a much slower pace in Belize. Chill out mode is recommended and a must
  8. Sleep in the jungle can get some getting used to, the birds and animals are very loud so turn in early to get a ful nights rest because you WILL be up early
  9. Trust your guides, they are trained in what they do and the best in the country
  10. Travel with as little expensive items as necessary (Jewelry, watches, rings, necklaces)
